A few hours ago, I landed in Los Angeles, turned on my phone, and confirmed what you already know. Sony Pictures Television is replacing me as showrunner on Community, with two seasoned fellows that I’m sure are quite nice - actually, I have it on good authority they’re quite nice, because…

![I will not be the first to say this. Tonight’s opening episode of Community, the first of three new episodes leading to the finale, was god damn brilliant. But I’m sure there are a lot of people out there that this episode did not entertain. The majority of the loyal fans, and 8-Bit enthusiasts would find this profound. You were watching a video game for 30 min. This show is crazy smart, very weird, and speaks to a generation of people who may or may not exist within the television watching public. That’s why this show was almost canceled. That’s why this show doesn’t speak to some people. It’s why the show is going to be on Friday nights next season.
Fuck It. The X Files did fine on Friday nights. There are lots of nerdy shows that died on Friday night. Whatever. This show has done enough episodes to live on. How many episodes did Arrested Development have? How many did Twin Peaks have? How long was Firefly on television? Friday Night Lights didn’t even get the dreaded Friday night time slot. Who knows when they aired that show. This show is a gift. It’s what we get for being smart and looking out for things that don’t disappoint us. We are lucky that we are promised 13 more nights of wonderful episodic escapism. Whatever night it plays, whether I watch them on TV or when they get put on DVD, I can’t wait. Thank you NBC. You make terrible choices, but even a network trying so hard to ruin itself makes something good once in a while.
